In June 2026 Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 (9 June), the most powerful generally available Claude model, built for the most demanding tasks in coding, analysis and long, autonomous agent workflows. It has a context window of 1 million tokens, but it also costs considerably more than the regular models.
Only three days later, on 12 June 2026, Anthropic suspended access to both Fable 5 and its sister model Mythos 5 for everyone who is not a US citizen. The background was an export control directive from the US authorities, linked to a reported "jailbreak": a way of getting round the model's safety barriers against misuse. On 30 June 2026 the US Department of Commerce lifted the directive, after Anthropic, working with the authorities and Amazon, built a new safety classifier that detects and blocks the reported technique. Fable 5 reopened globally from 1 July 2026.
What does this mean for businesses in Norway? From 1 July 2026 Fable 5 is available again to Norwegian users, across Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Cowork. Mythos 5, on the other hand, has so far only been reinstated for approved US organisations after a government review (Anthropic's "Project Glasswing"), and is not yet available to Norwegian businesses. The regular Claude models (Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5) were not affected by the suspension at all, and are more than good enough for the vast majority of business tasks.
