A chatbot for your website typically costs NOK 0–1,000+ a month for do-it-yourself SaaS, from about NOK 490–990 a month for many Norwegian ready-made solutions, and from NOK 1,490 a month for custom RAG at Nettsmed (setup from NOK 12,000, typically 2–4 weeks). The prices below were checked on the providers' public pages on 2 October 2026; VAT is stated where the source states it. All prices are in Norwegian kroner (NOK).

On our Norwegian site, «Spør KI» (Ask AI) at the bottom right is our own assistant, trained on our services and prices. It is a live example of what this guide is about: answers from your own content, not a generic widget.

What does a chatbot for your website cost?

The price depends on three things: whether you set it up yourself, whether a Norwegian provider does the work, and whether the bot should answer from your content with source citations (RAG).

LevelTypical monthly priceSetupFits when
Do-it-yourself SaaSNOK 0–1,000+/monthMinutes to daysSimple widget, low volume, you want to test quickly
Norwegian ready-made solutionfrom about NOK 490–990/month (often + start-up fee)Days to a few weeksYou want Norwegian support and a finished package
Custom RAG (Nettsmed)NOK 1,490–4,990/monthNOK 12,000–40,000, 2–4 weeksMore content, PDFs, GDPR data processing agreement, source citations

The cheapest is not always right. A free SaaS plan is fine for learning, but it often has to be trained by hand, and you rarely own the index or the logs. When visitors ask about price, shipping or policy, a good chatbot for your website needs answers from you, not from a generic model.

Three levels: SaaS, Norwegian ready-made and custom RAG

Do-it-yourself SaaS

International tools (Tidio, Chatbase, Intercom Fin, HubSpot and the like) let you paste a chatbot into your website in minutes. The price often starts free or low, and rises with AI conversations. They fit when volume is low and the content is simple. Always check the language quality in Norwegian (or the language your visitors use), where data is stored, and what happens when you go over the conversation cap.

Norwegian ready-made solution

Norwegian providers sell packages with setup, Norwegian support and often a GDPR focus. You pay for someone else to configure a chatbot for your website, not just for the licence. The prices below come from public price pages (October 2026).

Custom RAG

Here your website is indexed (pages, PDFs, possibly more), and the bot answers with a source citation. That is what we build as Nettsmed Chatbot. You pay for indexing, persona, embed, dashboard and operation, not just "AI tokens".

Norwegian chatbot providers (prices checked October 2026)

If you search for "AI chatbot Norway" or "chatbot Norway", provider pages dominate. Here are three providers with public prices that we have verified, plus our own offer. The figures are excl. VAT unless the source page says otherwise.

ProviderFrom priceStart-upNote
Chatbot NorgeNOK 390/month without AI; Enkel AI NOK 490/monthNOK 3,420 (Enkel AI)Several AI levels up to Kompleks AI at NOK 6,240/month
AikomNOK 990/month (Standard)—12-month lock-in, 60-day satisfaction guarantee (according to the price page)
coreAIfrom NOK 950/monthNo start-up fee (according to the price page)Several tiers (including 2,950 and 4,950); states no lock-in period
Nettsmed ChatbotNOK 1,490/month (Starter)from NOK 12,000RAG, EU conversation log, data processing agreement, typically 2–4 weeks

Other Norwegian platforms (for example customer service or CRM systems with chat) can also cover the need, but then you often buy more than "just" a chatbot for your website. Always compare: lock-in, where conversations are stored, whether the bot reads your content, and what happens above the conversation cap.

Nettsmed Chatbot: prices and what you get

We have built a RAG stack that indexes your pages and PDFs and answers with a source citation. Three tiers, one price per level:

TierMonthly priceSetup fromConversations/month
StarterNOK 1,490NOK 12,000up to 1,500
StandardNOK 2,500NOK 25,000up to 5,000
ProNOK 4,990NOK 40,000up to 15,000

Included in the packages: indexing, embed/WordPress plugin, dashboard, nightly reindexing, a GDPR data processing agreement, a conversation log in the EU (model API with the provider under SCCs), and support in Norwegian. A pilot project for NOK 8,000–12,000 if you want to test before a full setup. Want to know more? Contact us.

Chatbot for an online shop

In an online shop the questions are about stock, shipping, returns, sizes and "where is my order?". A chatbot for your website that has only read your blog helps little. It has to reach product data and policy pages, and know when to hand over to a person. That is why "chatbot for an online shop" and "chatbot for a website" overlap in search, but the requirements in a shop are stricter.

Practical requirements:

  • Answers on shipping, delivery time and returns from your pages (not general advice)
  • Product questions with a link to the right product
  • A clear handoff to chat or email when an order number or complaint comes up
  • Integration with WooCommerce or Shopify where needed

Chatbot for business and customer service

For many businesses the goal is leads and fewer repeated questions, not replacing the whole support team. A chatbot for your website that qualifies ("what do you need?", "shall we call you?") and logs the conversation saves time without pretending to be a person. That is also what the search term "chatbot for business" often means in practice: a visible chat on the company website, not a complete contact centre system.

Tell three layers apart:

  1. Chatbot for your website: answers visitors 24/7 from published content
  2. AI in customer service: suggests replies to agents (draft first)
  3. Helpdesk with AI: the whole case flow, not just the widget

When the bot is supposed to do something (book, update, fetch an order), you are getting close to an AI agent, not just a chatbot for your website.

Live chat vs. chatbot vs. AI agent

Live chat, chatbot for your website and AI agent: what sets them apart
Live chat, chatbot and AI agent do different jobs
TypeWhat the user getsWhen it fits
Live chatA person answers during opening hoursComplex or sensitive cases
ChatbotWorded answers from content and rulesCommon questions, leads, 24/7
AI agentAction as well as answersBooking, lookups, tasks

Most small and medium-sized businesses need a chatbot first, live chat as a safety net, and an agent only once the workflow is clear.

How to add a chatbot to your website

Whatever the provider, the pattern is the same:

  1. Choose the source: which pages and PDFs is the bot allowed to use?
  2. Set persona and limits: tone, what it should not answer, when it escalates
  3. Embed: one script line, a WordPress plugin or a Shopify app
  4. Test: the 20 most common questions before launch
  5. Run it: reindex when price or policy changes
Embedding a chatbot for your website on WordPress and Shopify with one script line
Embed: one line on WordPress, Shopify or your own stack

On WordPress and most CMSs it is a bubble at the bottom right. On Next.js or your own stack you paste the same script into the layout. What separates a good chatbot for your website from a bad one is the index, the logging and the support, not the "paste here" step itself.

GDPR and data storage

A chatbot for your website often processes personal data (IP address, free text, email in a lead form). That also applies to "free" widgets. Before going into production you should know:

  • Where the conversation log is stored (EU/EEA or a third country)
  • Whether the model API runs outside the EU, and whether there are SCCs and a data processing agreement
  • Whether data is used to train the provider's general model
  • How long logs are kept, and how you delete them

At Nettsmed the conversation log is stored in the EU; the model API may run with a provider in the US under SCCs and a data processing agreement. More context: GDPR for AI agents.

Frequently asked questions

What does a chatbot for a website cost?

Do-it-yourself SaaS is often NOK 0–1,000+ a month. Norwegian ready-made solutions typically start at around NOK 490–990 a month plus a start-up fee. Custom RAG at Nettsmed costs from NOK 1,490 a month with setup from NOK 12,000. The prices were checked in October 2026.

What is the best chatbot solution for Norwegian businesses?

There is no single winner for everyone. Choose SaaS for a quick test, a Norwegian ready-made solution for a finished package with local support, and custom RAG when the bot has to answer from your own content with source citations and a GDPR data processing agreement.

Are there Norwegian AI chatbots?

Yes. Several Norwegian providers offer a chatbot with Norwegian support and public prices, including Chatbot Norge, Aikom and coreAI. Nettsmed Chatbot is our own RAG offer with an EU conversation log and setup that typically takes 2–4 weeks.

Can I add chat to my website for free?

Many SaaS tools have free plans with a limited AI quota. That is enough to test, but rarely enough for production with Norwegian support, your own index and a data processing agreement. Also count the time you spend on setting it up yourself.

Which chatbot suits an online shop?

One that can answer questions on shipping, returns and products from your own pages, and that can hand over to a person for orders and complaints. WooCommerce and Shopify integration is an advantage when the bot needs product data.

What is the difference between a simple and an advanced AI chatbot?

A simple chatbot follows menus or fixed answers. An advanced AI chatbot understands free text and fetches answers from the website's content (RAG), often with a source citation. The more content and the stricter the requirements, the more the index and the operation matter.

Can a chatbot replace customer service?

No, not on its own. It handles the repeated questions and qualifies leads. Complex, sensitive or order-specific cases should go to a person. You get the best result when the chatbot, live chat and any AI drafts in the inbox work together.

Is an AI chatbot GDPR compliant?

It can be, if you have a data processing agreement, clarity on where logs and the model API run, and routines for deletion. Ask for documentation before going into production, especially in health, education and the public sector.
